General Introduction

The Electronic publishing Innovation Centre (EPICentre) is a research organisation set up to investigate all areas of electronic publishing - from the technical aspects and languages of document engineering right through to usability and usage studies of journals, e-books and web sites. New technology is having a major impact on the design, production and business models that underpin the way information is being created and distributed. EPICentre's members have considerable expertise in not only studying these changes but also of influencing developments within the publishing and information environment.

Initially set up by Dr Fytton Rowland with members from Loughborough and Cranfield Universities, the centre is currently headed by Dr Steve Probets of the Information Science Department at Loughborough University.

Many of our projects have investigated the impact of the internet on the creation and dissenmination of published material. We have considerable expertise in both electronic scholarly publishing and e-books and of studying the influence of new technologies such as Web 2.0 and personalisation technology.
